Arthur James Dippold is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Arthur J. Dippold of 1004 Grand Ave., Edwardsville, IL. James (he preferred to go by his middle name) grew up in Edwardsville and was active in the Boy Scouts and later DeMolay. He attended local public schools, played football and was wrestling team captain at Edwardsville High School and graduated Class of 1938. He enrolled in Blackburn College, Carlinville IL. and upon graduating after a two-year degree, entered the University of Illinois. James, a member of Kappa Delta Rho and "Keramos" honor society, earned his Bachelor of Science degree in ceramics in 1943 and immediately accepted a position with the Sprague Specialties Company, North Adams, Massachusetts. While employed at Sprague, James married Ms. Margery Richards on January 15, 1944. James was inducted in the Army in August, 1944 and reported to Camp Blanding, Florida and then to Fort Meade, Maryland. Sergeant A. James Dippold was assigned to General Courtney Hodge's First Army, 99th Division and went to Europe in December, 1944. Sgt. Dippold saw action throughout France and was in the famous Bridge at Remagen battle when he was killed in action. Sergeant A. James Dippold is survived by his parents, his wife, a sister, Mrs. George Rizzoli, and a brother, Dan. SGT Dippold is buried in Valley View Cemetery in Edwardsville and was 23 years, 11 months and 26 days of age.
