David A. Boyle

First Lieutenant - United States Marine Corps

December 31, 1956 - April 27th, 1983

David A. Boyle is the son of Delbert & Wilma Boyle of 1354 Lee Dr.,Edwardsville, IL. Dave grew up in Edwardsville, attended local schools and graduated from Edwardsville High School Class of 1975. Dave was on the EHS football team and wrestling team. He attended St. Louis Christian College in St. Louis, MO and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in June, 1980. In July of that year, Dave joined the Marines and reported to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he received his training and later his commission as a Second Lieutenant. 2nd Lt. Boyle received helicopter pilot training at Naval Air Station, Whiting Field, Pensacola, Florida, received his wings in 1982 and was commissioned First Lieutenant David A. Boyle. 1LT Boyle was attached to the Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 461, at the Marine Corps Air Station in New River, North Carolina. It was during a routine flight aboard a CH-53 that Lt. Boyle's helicopter experienced mechanical failure and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Virginia. First Lt. Boyle saved the lives of his three crewmates, but perished in the act. Services were held at LeClaire Christian Church in Edwardsville and burial is in St. James Cemetery near Edwardsville. He is survived by his parents and three sisters, Terri Frierdich, Karen Boyle and Mrs. Jan Freitag. First Lieutenant David A. Boyle was 26 years, 3 months and 27 days of age.
