Dr. Lester W. Baird

Captain - United States Marine Corps

April 19, 1907 - October 6th, 1943

Dr. Lester White Baird is the son of Henry N. and Maude W. Baird of Edwardsville, IL. and attended local public schools here and graduated from Edwardsville High School in the Class of 1925. He attended and graduated from the University of Illinois and finished his medical education in Chicago in 1932. Les married Ms. Helen Keshner of Edwardsville on March 30, 1933 while a resident surgeon at the Santa Clara County Hospital in San Jose, California. He was awarded a fellowship in radiology in 1934 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Baird joined the United States Marine Corp on October 12, 1942 and was awarded the rank of captain. Captain Dr. Lester Baird was in charge of the X-ray department at Scott-White Clinic in Temple, Texas when he suffered a heart attack. He was taken to Camp Carson Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado and recovered enough to see his wife and hear contents of letters, but a sudden change for the worst occurred and he failed to rally. Captain Dr. Baird had received recognition from the North American X-ray Society and was secretary of the Texas X-ray Society. Captain Dr. Lester W. Baird is survived by his wife and son, Robert, his mother and one sister, Mrs. Maurice Whiteside. He was 36 years, 5 months and 18 days of age.
