Edward H. S. Stille was born near Staunton, Illinois, the son of Mr. & Mrs. William Stille. His family moved to the vicinity of Fruit when he was still quite young. Edward attended parochial school in Alhambra and was confirmed by Rev. J.H. Dinkmeier of Evangelical Salem church on April 8, 1906. After graduation, he worked on the farm of William Bardelmeier of Hamel Township for a number of years before joining the Army. Edward was sent to Camp Taylor, Kentucky and the to Camp Beauregard, Louisiana for training. Private Stille arrived in France on September 9, 1918, quite possibly already ill with influenza and died from pneumonia on September 19, 1918. He is survivedby his parents and five sisters, Mrs. Ella Kleuter, Mrs. Lydia Ohm, Ms. Emma, Martha and Bertha, and four brothers, William, Otto, Herman and Elmer. Private Edward H. Stille is buried in Immanuel Evangelical Cemetery in Marine, Illinois and was 26 years, 2 months and 10 days of age.
