Frank B. Kahtz

Private. - United States Army

June 18, 1893 - February 14th, 1918

Frank Bernard Kahtz is the son of Mr. Bernard and Mrs. Ida Kahtz of 419 Randle St. Edwardsville, Illinois. Frank was the first area native to die in uniform since the beginning of the 20th Century. Frank attended St. Boniface Catholic School and after his graduation entered the employment of N.O. Nelson Manufacturing plant in LeClaire as a machinist. Frank was a member of the Melverton Club and a member of The Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge
# 1561. Private Kahtz was a member of A Company, 333 Infantry and was stationed at Camp Zachary Taylor in Kentucky when he died in the base hospital from appendicitis. Funeral services were held at St. Boniface Catholic Church officiated by Fr. J.D. Metzler and burial is at St. Boniface Cemetery. It is reported that the funeral procession of Private Frank B. Kahtz was the first military funeral held in Edwardsville. He is survived by his parents, a brother, August and two sisters, Ms. Margaret and Ms. Katherine Kahtz. Private Frank B. Kahtz was 24 years, 7 months and 26 days of age.
