John E. Burroughs

Sergeant Major - United States Marine Corps

December 4, 1884 - April 11th, 1918

John Edward Burroughs is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Dent E. Burroughs of 730 W. St. Louis St., Edwardsville, Illinois and brother of William D. Burroughs and two sisters, Mrs. H.M. Tartt and Ms. Louise Burroughs. He grew up in Edwardsville and after graduation in the E.H.S. Class of 1903 enrolled in the University of Illinois. He worked for several large railroad companies before he joined the United States Marine Corp. He served in the Marine Corps and Engineer Corps for seven years and had risen to the rank of Sergeant Major and was honorably discharged in October, 1916 before re-enlisting at the outbreak of the war. Sergeant Major Burroughs was stationed at Quantico, Virginia. when he died of pneumonia. Services were conducted at his parent's residence by Dr. Willis M. Cleaveland of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and interment with an honor guard of Marine sergeants was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Edwardsville. He was 33 years, 4 months and 7 days of age.
