Virgil H. Bertels

March 18, 1921 - January 17th, 1945

Virgil H. Bertels is a son of Mr. & Mrs. Louis Bertels of Dorsey, IL He attended the Dorsey public school and was a graduate of the Jordan Diesel School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After his graduation, Virgil worked with his father in Dorsey conducting a filling station there. Virgil entered the service on May 25, 1944 and received his training at Spartansburg, South Carolina. It was there that he married Bertha Boyd, also of Dorsey, on July 1, 1944. Private Bertles was assigned to General George Patton's Third Army and was engaged in heavy fighting during the famous Battle of the Bulge and was killed in action in Belgium. Funeral rites were conducted at Dorsey Lutheran Church by Rev. Otto Strothman followed by interment in the Dorsey Cemetery. He was survived by his parents, wife and three brothers, Eldon, Merle, and twin brother Vernon. Private Virgil H. Bertels was 23 years, 9 months and 30 days of age.
