Eugene T. Burns

Private First Class - United States Army

February 9, 1926 - January 25th, 1945

Eugene T. Burns is the son of Thomas & Catherine Burns of 419 Hillsboro, Edwardsville,IL. Eugene grew up in Edwardsvilleand attended local public schools. He was attending Edwardsville High School when he quit to join the Army in May , 1944. Eugene was sent to Fort Hood, Texas for his basic training and was then sent to Camp Gruber, Oklahoma. Private First Class Eugene T. Burns was assigned to B Company, 222nd Infantry Regiment of the famed 42nd Rainbow Division and arrived in France on November 1, 1944. PFC Burns was killed in action defending the town of Ohlungen. Visitation was held at Lesley Marks Funeral Home in Edwardsville, with the service held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Mass service by Rev. Fr. P.P. McGuinness and the military honors at Calvary Cemetery performed by the Edwardsville VFW Post 1299. Private First Class Eugene T. Burns is survived by his mother, (his father Thomas, died some time earlier), two brothers, Edwin and Raymond Burns, and two sisters, Mrs. Morris Kirchner and Mrs. William Brown. He was 19 years, 11 months and 16 days of age
