William Brady McDaid is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles McDaid (Mrs. McDaid died when William was 5 years old) of Fangenroth Rd. in rural Edwardsville IL. ( the farm was located on the present day campus of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville). William grew up here and attended local schools. He became a welder and was employed at General Castings Corporation in Granite City, IL. William married Ms. Margaret Van Vertloo on July 24, 1943 and he was inducted into the Army on August 5, 1943. Private First Class McDaid was a member of the U.S. Army Engineer Corps and was sent to the Pacific theater on May 1, 1944. PFC McDaid participated in several campaigns before his participation in the Philippine Invasion. It was during the drive for Manila that PFC McDaid was killed in action. He is buried at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial (aka. Fort William McKinley Cemetery) in Manila, Philippines and is survived by his father, wife, two brothers, Leo and Merle and a sister, Mrs. Hazel Weaver. Private First Class William B. McDaid was 32 years, 5 months and 23 days of age.
