Roland W. Bauer

Staff Sergeant - United States Army

March 29, 1923 - June 10th, 1945

Roland W. Bauer is the son of Mr. & Mrs. William Bauer of 922 Longfellow Ave., Edwardsville, IL. Roland grew up in Edwardsville and attended local public schools, graduating at Edwardsville High School Class of 1942. Staff Sergeant Bauer joined the Army and participated in the invasion of the Philippines. During the Battle of Leyte he received bayonet and shrapnel wounds on November 3, 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart medal. While in the hospital recovering from his wounds, SSgt. Bauer wrote extensively to his parents of his exploits in the Philippine battles, several of which were reprinted in the Edwardsville Intelligencer newspaper. SSgt. Bauer returned to the 24th Infantry Division and participated in the fight on Mindanao Island where he was killed in action. SSgt. Bauer is buried at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial (aka. Fort William McKinley Cemetery) in Manila, Philippines. He is survived by his parents and a brother, Calvin. Staff Sergeant Roland W. Bauer was 22 years, 2 months and 12 days of age.
