Robert H. Berlemann

Private First Class - United States Army

January 13, 1931 - September 3rd, 1950

Robert H. Berlemann is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Lester E. Berlemann of 400 Springer Ave., Edwardsville, Illinois. Robert attended grade school in Hoyleton, IL. (his mother died in 1941) while his father fought in the European theater in World War II with the Fifth Armored Division. Robert returned to Edwardsville and continued his education and graduated from Edwardsville High School Class of 1949. Robert enlisted in the Army on October 4, 1949 and was sent to Fort Riley, Kansas for his basic training and then to Fort Lewis, Washington. Private First Class Berlemann entered the Korean Conflict on July 21, 1950 with the Second Infantry Division. PFC Berlemann engaged the North Korean forces at the Pohang Sector on the Naktong River during a Communist offensive to retake Pohang. PFC Berlemann is the first area soldier to be killed in action during the Korean Conflict. Funeral services were held at Eden Evangelical church, Rev. H.J.Bredehoeft officiated and interment followed at Woodlawn Cemetery in Edwradsville. He is survived by his father, his step-mother Mrs. Rose Mary Berlemann, and a brother, Lester Jr..
Private First Class Robert H. Berlemann was 19 years, 7 months and 21 days of age.
