Eugene F. Poeling

Private First Class - United States Army

February 19, 1945 - May 20th, 1967

Eugene F. Poeling is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Peter Poeling and was born in Portage Des Sioux, MO and moved with his parents to a farm near Worden, IL in 1955. He attended local public schools here and graduated from Edwardsville High School Class of 1964. Eugene worked at Owens Illinois Glass Company after graduation until he entered the Army on October 28, 1966. PFC Poeling was sent to Viet Nam on April 6, 1967 as a member of Company B, First Battalion, Eighth Infantry, 4th Infantry Division. Private First Class Eugene F. Poeling was killed in action when his firing position was hit by an enemy mortar round near Pleiku, Viet Nam. He is buried in Portage Des Sioux, MO in the St. Francis Catholic Cemetery. He is survived by his parents, a sister, Mary Lou and two brothers, Paul and Bernard. Private First Class Eugene F. Poeling was 22 years, 3 months and one day of age.
