Richard J. Sasek

Captain - United States Marine Corps

February 8, 1937 - July 6th, 1967

Richard J. Sasek is the son of Mr. John R. & Mrs. Mary Sasek of 1206 Madison Ave. Edwardsville, IL. (His father, John died in 1951). Richard grew up in Edwardsville and attended local public schools. He graduated from Edwardsville High School Class of 1955 and attended Washburn University, B.S. 1960 in Topeka, Kansas. Richard played professional baseball with the AA team of the Los Angeles Dodgers. He entered the Marine Corps in 1960 and was commissioned a second lieutenant. Captain Sasek and had been in Viet Nam since 1966. Cpt. Sasek had already been awarded two Purple Heart medals, the Vietnam Service Cross and the Legion of Merit medal, when, during his second tour of duty, his position came under artillery attack in Quang Tri Province, Viet Nam. Cpt. Sasek was the commander of D Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. A funeral service was held at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Glen Carbon, IL, Fr. Ralph Guido presiding and burial is at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. He is survived by his mother, wife Janet, a son, Michael and a daughter, Michaele, one brother, Raymond and a sister, Mrs. Charles Kovarik. Captain Richard J. Sasek was 30 years, 4 months and 28 days of age.
