Roman G. Mason III

SGT - United States Army

September 25, 1947 - January 27th, 1969

Roman Gale "Duke" Mason III is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Roman H. Mason II of Rural Route #1, Edwardsville. Roman, all of his family and friends called him Duke, spent most of his young life in Edwardsville. His family purchased a farm, west of Edwardsville that required Roman attend Roxana High School and graduated in Class of 1965. After graduation Roman was employed by the Olin Mathieson Chemical Corp. in East Alton before entering the Army in September, 1967. He took basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, and advanced infantry training at Ft. Gordon, Ga. He graduated from paratroopers school in April, 1968 at Ft. Benning, Ga and was assigned to Company E, 50th Infantry, 9th Airborne. SGT. E-5 Roman "Duke" Mason shipped out to Viet Nam on May 10, 1968. SGT. Mason was stationed at Dong Tam and joined the long range recon unit. His team spent many days in the field, deep into enemy territory, but were ambushed on January 27, 1969. Three team members were killed that day, including SGT. E-5 Roman G. "Duke" Mason III. Funeral services were held at the Assembly of God church in Roxana, Rev. M. Twente presiding, arrangements by Marks Funeral Home in Wood River and burial, with military honor guard by Granite City Army Depot, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Edwardsville. SGT. Mason is survived by his parents, his younger brother Michael, paternal grandmother, Mrs. August Determan of Edwardsville, and maternal grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Clyde Wisnasky of Edwardsville. SGT. E-5 Roman Gale "Duke" Mason III was 21 years, 3 months, and 2 days of age.
